KMKR Fundraiser

Xerocraft Hackerspace of Tucson, AZ is delighted to announce that the FCC has granted us a construction permit for a low power FM radio station.

We will erect a 50ft, 50W FM transmitter tower, which we expect to cover a two mile radius of downtown Tucson, including the University of Arizona.

We need your help! We need to raise $10,000 to buy the following equipment: a transmitter, a lightning arrester, an antenna, an Emergency Alert System decoder, a tower, a studio and sound equipment.

Challenges Remain…

The committee in charge of KMKR Radio will have many challenges to overcome. We have an 18 month window in which to broadcast our first “hello world” message or else our permit expires and we lose this amazing opportunity.

We also have to deal with the city permit office, get architectural plans drawn up, construct a radio tower at a historic site (which has its own set of complications), train DJs (how to present on the radio, learn requirements like mentioning our call sign at the top of the hour as well as learn prohibitions like no cursing), get a broadcast license from the FCC (which requires a licensed engineer to sign off on our hardware after it’s constructed), build a sound proofed radio studio at Xerocraft (our machines and the train tracks right outside are loud!),

We love our current space at the Steinfeld furniture warehouse but we are crowded with tools and equipment. We want to expand to other areas of the building to make room for the studio as well as for new tools that we currently have to turn away due to our crowded space. We are discussing the expansion with our beloved landlord, WAMO (Warehouse Arts Management Organiztion). Your support will help us acquire more space and make more wonderful things available to the community!
